What is happening with Vacation Home Rentals?

A petition to virtually eliminate Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in the Tahoe Township was submitted to the Clerk early in February 2024, but was determined to not have sufficient signatures to be place on the November ballot. That determination is now being challenged in court. In addition the Board of County Commissioners passed an ordinance to ban VHRs north of Cave Rock, only allowing a small number by homeowners living in the Glenbrook Home Owners Association able to rent their homes. This ban is also under court review.

What is the impact to Douglas County if the initiative is validated by the court and then passes in the November General Election?

  • Reduction in tourism in lake tahoe and tourism related jobs.

  • $5,353,463 in lost tax revenue from VHR related taxes and fees.

  • Further limits on homeowners rights to use their homes as they see fit.
